L.A.'s political season never really ends

When it comes to elections, there is no rest in Los Angeles.

At any given moment, either a regular election is being held in one place or a special election is on somewhere else.

Just look at what is upcoming.

On May 17, there will be the runoff for one Los Angeles Unified school board seat and one Community College Board seat as well as the special election to find a replacement for former Rep. Jane Harman, D-El Segundo.

With Councilwoman Janice Hahn, Secretary of State Debra Bowen and local political activist Marcy Winograd in that race, there is expected to be a runoff on July 12.

If Hahn does win, that will mean another special election will be needed to fill her council seat.

And, there already is a line developing of potential candidates.

Former Councilman Rudy Svorinich, who is now eligible for a third term, has made no secret of his desire to return to City Hall.

But, he will have to claw his way through a crowded field.

Among those said to be interested are Assemblyman Warren Furutani, D-Carson, and Pat McOsker, president of the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City.

McOsker was born and raised in San Pedro, but now lives in Redondo Beach. He said he would move back in to the district if Hahn is elected to Congress.

McOsker said he has received strong encouragement to run for the seat and he is considering it...

Also looking to future elections is City Attorney Carmen Trutanich. While insisting he hopes District Attorney Steve Cooley runs for re-election next year, much is being made of the endorsement he has received from Sheriff Lee Baca.

Trutanich should be careful on how he uses it, however.

Baca is facing some heat over the gifts he has received from various folks over the years.

And, Baca also has a habit of endorsing just about anyone - which Trutanich should know. In his race for City Attorney against then-Councilman Jack Weiss, Baca had endorsed both men.

In the meantime, Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson, another candidate for the top prosecutor's job, is trying to remind voters that Trutanich signed a pledge to not run for higher office in his 2009 campaign...

Perhaps, it's the Midas touch of being in City Hall, where everything an official thinks of becomes gold.

Such appears to be the case with Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who famously coined the phrase of "gold in the gutter" after raising parking meter rates throughout the city.

Now, as the City Council's budget committee continues its review of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's proposed $6.9 billion budget, Rosendahl is looking for "gold in the air."

Looking at all the revenue billboard companies are making off digital billboards, Rosendahl wants the city to look at a way to tax some of that revenue.

He also has asked for a review on whether the city can get any funds from AEG for the naming rights it has sold for its proposed downtown stadium.
