Kidnappers of Tujunga man drop plans to holdup his jewelry store as cops close in

TUJUNGA - Three men who kidnapped a jewelry store owner at his home aborted a holdup when police started closing in on them Saturday.

The suspects got into a home in the 90800 block of Cabanas Avenue about 11:30 p.m. Friday, abducted the man and started driving him toward his store near Sherman Way and Bellaire Avenue, Los Angeles police Lt. Sunil Dutta of Foothill Station said.

The crooks got spooked when they saw patrol cars and a helicopter overhead, and they let the victim go in Van Nuys about 12:30 a.m.

The suspects got away with the victim's car, cellular telephone, keys to the jewelry store and some valuables from the home, Dutta said.

Police were looking for a dark-green 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL 450 with the license 5YGC426, he said. Anyone who sees the vehicle was asked to call 911.
