Tim Hetherington, director of the Oscar-nominated documentary Restrepo, was killed Wednesday during intense fighting in Libya.

Hetherington, 41, was caught amid fighting between Moammar Gaddafi's forces and rebels in the besieged Libyan city of Misurata and was injured ? along with three other photographers ? when Gaddafi's forces pounded the city with mortars, The Washington Post reports.

Hetherington was rushed to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead soon after, the newspaper reports.

Hetherington, a photojournalist and filmmaker, rose to fame with his documentary that followed the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. Hetherington co-produced Restrepo with journalist Sebastian Junger.

Born in Liverpool, England, Hetherington studied literature at Oxford University, and later photojournalism, and was also a contributing photographer for Vanity Fair magazine, according to CNN.

According to the Restrepo Web site, "Hetherington has reported on conflict and human rights issues for more than ten years. He was the only photographer to live behind rebel lines during the 2003 Liberian civil war ? work that culminated in the film Liberia: an Uncivil War and the book Long Story Bit by Bit: Liberia Retold."
